Axel Ingelman-Sundberg Best Paper Prize

  • E. Jelovsek, L. Brubaker, M. Gantz, N. Pugh, A.C. Weidner, H.E. Richter, S. Menefee, P. Norton, J. Schaffer, S. Meikle, M.D. Barber: Five-Year Outcomes of Uterosacral Ligament Suspension or Sacrospinous Ligament Fixation for Apical Pelvic Organ Prolapse: A Randomized Trial

This study showed no significant difference in recurrent POP, cure rate, and quality of life between sacrospinous ligament fixation and uterosacral ligament suspension. It’s a surgeon’s discretion to decide which one to choose.

Best Abstract Presented by a Physician-In-Training Prizes

  • Balachandran, N.L. Curtiss, and J. Duckett: Cystodistension as a Treatment for Overactive Bladder – Results of an RCT

Cystodistension has been in practice for a long time for OAB management, however, this RCT study highlighted no short-term or long-term benefit from it. Interestingly, this RCT study also highlighted that routine cystoscopy should be performed in cases of refractory OAB, as in a small proportion of cases bladder malignancy has been diagnosed.

  • Husby, C. Krogsgaard Tolstrup, G. Lose, N. Klarsvov: The Manchester-Fothergill Procedure Versus Vaginal Hysterectomy in the Treatment of Uterine Prolapse: A Matched Cohort Study

This study showed increased risk of intra-operative and post-operative complications with vaginal hysterectomy (VH) compared to MF procedure. Routine VH for the management of urogenital prolapse should not always be the case. The study also showed a significant increase in prolapse recurrence in all three in the VH cohort.  VH in women <45 may increase the risk of early menopause, hence alternate surgical options are something we as surgeons should discuss with patients.

Best Video Prize

  • Bezerra, D.M. Saboia, C. Vasconcelos, M. Oria, J. Vasconcelos Neto, L.S. Bezarra, T. Magalhaes: Let’s Give the Pessary a Try?

This video, in which a patient shares her story, makes the idea behind pessary treatment easier for others to comprehend, accept, and manage. This video account of a patient’s journey with pessary treatment is an effective way of disseminating information to patients who can’t access the healthcare system due to various reasons – from social taboo, lack of financial resources, or embarrassment/shame.

Best Basic Science Prize

  • L. Curtiss, A. Balachandran, L. Krska, S. Wildman, J. Duckett: Age, Menopausal Status, and the Bladder Microbiome

This study highlighted the importance of vaginal estrogen use in treating postmenopausal patients with recurrent UTIs in conjunction with antibiotics.
